Adaptogen, the term was coined by Soviet toxicologist N. V. Lazarev in 1947 to describe a substance that meets these 3 conditions:
（1）non-toxic, must not damage the normal function of the human body.
（2）decrease our sensitivity to outside stress, keeping us in calm
（3）non-specific resistance to adverse influences like stress, environmental pollution, climate change and radiation.
Generally speaking, it is a nontoxic substance and especially a plant extract that is held to increase the body's ability to resist the damaging effects of stress and promote or restore normal physiological functioning. On top of that, in 1998, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defined Adaptogen is a metabolic regulator that has been shown to contribute to improve environmental adaptability and to prevent external stimuli. There are dozens of plants, growing in some of the world’s harshest environments, that fall under the adaptogen category, Rhodiola Rosea and Ginseng is one of the most well-known adaptogenic herbs.
Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. When the body feels pressure, the “stress hormone” cortisol is released to resist external stress and help you balance the hormones. Once a perceived threat has passed, hormone levels return to normal. However, if the stress lasts for a long time, it can lead to elevated cortisol levels, which may damage your health. According to research, there are relative reactions in the body against chronic stress, including anxiety, depression, digestive problems, headache, sleep problems, weight gain, memory and attention deficits, etc.
Back to 19th century, there is a non-mainstream medical treatment, Naturopathic Medicine or naturopathy. Naturopathy is a form of alternative medicine that employs an array of pseudoscientific practices branded as natural, non-invasive, or promoting self-healing. In the 21st century, Dr Ben Tabachnik bringing with him decades of adaptogenic research said:” When our body is subjected to stress, adaptogens help the adrenal glands mount an immediate hormonal response by manufacturing and releasing more stress hormones.” In short, adaptogens are a group of herbs and some mushrooms that support our body’s natural ability to deal with stress with their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to the specific needs of our body.
Cordyceps militaris: rich of biologically active compounds like cordycepin, cordycepic acid, amino acids, polysaccharide and SOD, strengthening the immune system, improving athletic performance, reducing the effects of aging.
Rhodiola rosea:commonly called as golden root, acclaimed for its adapt characteristics, considered to be one of the best adaptogens for relieving fatigue and enhancing vitality.
Siberian ginseng: Shigoka from the Siberian Plateau contains 30% more active ingredients than other sources, can supposedly strengthen the body and improve fatigue and blood circulation
Salvia miltiorrhiza: Danshen is a powerful herb that is good for blood vessels, improves cardiovascular circulation and prevents thrombosis.
Houttuynia cordata, also known as fishy smelling herb because of the strong odor as being freshly cut, has long been used in Asia as a kind of wild herb. Houttuyniae has good clinical functions such as assisting body fluid circulation, clearing heat, and resolving toxin. It is an important herb in many traditional medicine systems well indicated in its Japanese name Dokudami, which means “poison blocking plant”.
Dalong Biotechnology obtained houttuynia from Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, council of Agriculture. These houttuynia were cultivated through contract farming by outstanding farmers and guarded seriously to ensure the quality. In the process of extracting houttuynia, the ingredients within, houttuyfonate is easy to get lost with the evaporating oil. Dalong Biotechnology extracts houttuynia with the patented steam distillation technique（Patent Number: M572781） to keep the essential functional ingredient. The antibacterial tests were conducted to see the bacteriostatic effect of the houttuynia extraction.
